Fellow travelers,

A couple of weeks ago I took a Sunday drive out to one of my favorite places, the Alta Mesa Vineyard. It’s a magical site perched high above the Cuyama Valley on the eastern edge of Santa Barbara County. Imagine mountains meeting high desert - rugged, majestic, desolate and peaceful all at once - a contemplative piece of dirt where I’ve spent many hours. On this particular Sunday while walking rows and tasting grapes, it struck me that I was doing so for my twentieth season. You see, it was twenty years ago that I fermented Grenache from the Alta Mesa to comprise my very first wine. This vineyard was the trailhead to my vocation and that realization prompted me to take stock of the past two decades’ worth of lessons and experiences.

The places I’ve been lucky enough to work with - I have so many gate codes saved in my phone I could be the ultimate guide for vineyard view picnics. The crazy equipment I’ve learned to operate - trucks and trailers, bigger trucks, forklifts, tractors, excavators & skid steers. The plumbing and electrical skills I’ve picked up - as they say, just enough to be dangerous. All of the wines I’ve made under the Sans Liege and Groundwork labels - Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Counoise, Petite Sirah, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Picpoul, Clairette, Graciano, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Gris and Albariño. I’ve bottled (and canned) big reds, racy whites, rich whites, chillable reds, dessert wines, sparkling wines, orange wines, single varietal & single vineyard wines, blends, dual-vintage wines, multi-vintage wines and I still desire to make many more.

As I mused over the past, what resonated most, however, were the relationships I’ve made along the way. The hundreds of people I’ve worked with. Winegrowers, field workers, truck drivers, interns, cellar crews, hospitality staff, wine buyers, sommeliers, chefs and sales reps. The folks who have been generous enough with their time to stop into our tasting rooms and check out what we’ve put into our bottles. But especially all of you fellow travelers. I would like to sincerely thank you not only for the support but for the camaraderie on my path that started twenty years ago up on the Alta Mesa. It has truly meant the world to me.

To twenty more,
Curt
